MUSIC HISTORY, THEORY, PIANO I (Grade 9 - 5 credits)

Prep School course for Instrumental and Vocal majors

Course Description

Music Theory, History, and Piano I is a course designed for freshmen enrolled in the Vocal and Instrumental Preparatory School. The class introduces students to music theory including basic music reading, scales, and chords. Students also receive an overview of Western European piano literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century. Both the theory and history serve as a backdrop for learning the basics of playing piano including the following:

  • 1. proper hand position and finger technique
  • 2. melodies played with both hands
  • 3. melodies in the 5-finger position with chords in the left hand
  • 4. melodies beyond the 5-finger position with chords in the left hand


    Student Proficiencies

    1. Students will know how to read music.

    2. Students will be able to write the C, F, and G major scales.

    3. Students will be able to write I, IV, V, and V7 chords in the above keys.

    4. Students will know examples of piano music by major "Classical" composers including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninov.

    5. Students will be able to perform piano music with melodies beyond the 5-finger position with chords in the left hand.

    6. Students will be able to do an independent research project and presentation on a composer in music history.

    7. Students will be able to compose original music for the keyboard.
