MUSIC HISTORY, THEORY, PIANO II (Grades 10, 11 - 5 credits)
Prep School course for Instrumental and Vocal majors

Course Description
Music Theory, History, and Piano II is a course designed for sophomores enrolled in the Vocal and Instrumental Preparatory School. The class continues student's learning of music theory including form, minor scales, and common terms. Students also receive an introduction to form through an analysis of Sonata Cycle in Western European piano literature as well as an overview of jazz and pop piano composer-performers. Both the theory and history serve as a backdrop for learning the following aspects of playing piano:
1. varied accompaniment patterns
2. minor musical pieces
3. 4-part chorales
4. duets and rounds
5. classic piano repertoire
Student Proficiencies
1. Students will be able to perform melodies on the piano with a variety of accompaniment patterns.
2. Students will be able to write the three different forms of minor scales and common chord progressions in minor keys.
3. Students will be able to perform piano music in minor keys, read and perform 4-part chorales, and perform duets and classic piano literature at the keyboard.
4. Students will theoretically understand Sonata Cycle as well as know examples from Classical piano repertoire.
5. Students will know examples of major jazz and pop pianists including Scott Joplin, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner and Stevie Wonder.
6. Students will be able to do an independent research project and presentation on a composer in music history.
7. Students will be able to compose original music for the keyboard.
