June 2009

HILLSIDE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Together We Create Success.

The Superintendent: The year has been filled with many positives for Hillside. The previous and present School Boards are continuing to find areas of collaboration to benefit both the children and the community of Hillside. Their efforts are resulting in a stronger academic program, greater financial efficiencies, increased cooperation with Hillside government departments and the initiation of programs and efforts that will bring positive academic and social improvements.

The School Board: During the Retreat held in June the School Board determined Goals for the 2009-2010 school year: These goals provide a big picture direction and should result in increased academic opportunities for students and improved facilities to support academic programs.

Communication: This is an area that needs to improve. We now have a telephone and Email student notification system. More effort will be devoted to getting information to parents and to encourage participation by parents in many decisions and projects.

Grade Two: One of the requirements from the State is to provide space for an increasing Pre-K school population. The school system is also putting special emphasis to make it possible that every child who is promoted from grade two is proficient in language arts and mathematics. This will insure a strong academic start and increase the probability of success in school. To make both of these possible, spaces will be provided for the Pre-k in A.P. Morris and grade two students will have their own special facility. There will be communication concerning grade two students that will be sent out approximately the first week of August.

Registration: Registration has been problematic for many years. There is still not a good system in place. If you are interested in joining a committee to develop a superior method please e-mail Mrs. Session, psession@hillsidek12.org during the month of July.

Influenza A: Influenza A encompasses a number of flu including the Swine Flu. The test most administered by physicians is to determine if a flu falls into this grouping. Regular school is over and summer sessions will soon begin. We will watch for any indication of health related problems and take measures to protect the students and staff. If a child has a temperature or shows signs of illness, parents should consult a physician and until a physician states the child is not contagious the child should not be with other children.

The Prime Time Three to Six programs: Just days ago we were notified by the Newark Museum, that partly because of funding, they will not be able to continue the Pre K through grade two Prime Time Three To Six program for the 2009-2010 school year. The program for the magnet schools grades threesix will continue as that receives separate funding. We are trying to find another organization that is capable of providing a program.

My best wishes to you and your family for a healthy, fulfilling summer.

Sincerely,

Mike Roth
