To guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum aligned with the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards in each of the core areas outlined by the NJ Department of Education. (Mathematics, Language Arts Literacy, Science, Visual and Performing Arts, Health and Physical Education, Social Studies, World Language, Technological Literacy, Career Education, and Life Skills).
To articulate curricula between for all grades.
To include classroom visitations that provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the instructional program. To assess instructional programs in order to develop effective, district wide professional development/in-service programs. To provide instructional orientation for new Pre-K to 12 teachers.
To collaborate with principals in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of effectiv programs of supervision and evaluation.
To provide guidance to school leadership teams in the selection and use of textbooks and instructional materials.
To assist in the recruiting, interviewing, screening, and recommending of qualified candidates for positions for professional staff.
To monitor skill areas and proficiencies for student achievement and success on state mandated and district assessments.
To collaborate with parents/guardians to build confidence and engagement towards the development and acceleration of their child/ren's emotional, social, and academic growth.
To prepare and submit State reports for Early Childhood, DEPA, No Child Left Behind, Character Education Grants. To assist in the preparation of budgets for the Pre-K to 6 schools.
Elementary- The Hillside Township School District’s K-6 Language Arts curriculum aligns with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The presentation of the interrelationship of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing is a dynamic interactive process. Through the use of direct instruction, modeling, practice and application, and quality literature, the students will develop the skills necessary to be active listeners, thoughtful readers, critical thinkers, effective communicators, and collaborators. The language arts curriculum embraces the values of "Writers Workshop" and allows students to explore the many components that construct the richness of language and the many genres through which authors express ideas about the world.
Middle School- The Language Arts program requires students to think critically, creatively and strategically. Students grow intellectually, socially and emotionally as they develop a broad range of writing skills and strategies. Students develop the skills they need to flourish in adult society (critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity) and discover the benefits that come with communicating well through speech and writing. Practicing each stage of the writing process facilitates the opportunity for students to use writing to explore their ideas and feelings and to analyze their writing. They also continue to refine their research skills and their command of standard written English. All of their writing experiences help students to learn to evaluate their writing as a product and as a mode of thinking.
High School- We believe that all students deserve an education that encompasses the multi-talents and multi-intelligences of our student body. They deserve to be surrounded by a culture of high expectations and a rich array of options for the future. The electives of the English department offer varied educational experiences that may define pathways for future careers or opportunities to explore personal aspirations and interests.

Mathematics is an excellent forum for students to develop the thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to be a life-long learner. The math curriculum was designed to foster students' natural curiosity by encouraging all students, regardless of gender, economic status, or cultural heritage, to develop the ability, confidence, and motivation to succeed academically. Everyday Math is utilized in grades K-6 and the program is aligned with the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. The program is committed to providing integrated learning experiences that will engage children and empower them to feel a sense of control over their own lives. Once enabled to problem solve, communicate, and access information, these students will be prepared to be contributing members of society. The ultimate goal of mathematics curriculum reform is to achieve mathematical literacy for all students.

The Hillside Township School District is committed to excellence. We believe that all children are entitled to an education that will equip them to become productive citizens of the twenty-first century. We believe that an education grounded in the fundamental principles of science will provide students with the skills and content necessary to become our future leaders.
A sound science education is grounded in the principles of inquiry and rigor. Children areactively engaged in learning as they model real-world scientific behaviors to construct knowledge. They have ample opportunities to manipulate materials in ways that are developmentally appropriate to their age. They work in an environment that encourages them to take risks, think critically, make models, note patterns and anomalies in those patterns. Children are encouraged to ask questions, not just the "how" and the "what" of observed phenomena, but also the "why".
Our program provides teachers with cost-effective science materials that are aligned to state and national standards, incorporate instructional strategies that are research-based, and provides teachers with a deep understanding of science and the pedagogical underpinnings of science. Our teachers receive quality professional development from the Merk Foundation for Science as well as the Martinson Foundation at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Our K-8 kit based program encourages "hands-on science" and is endorsed by the National Science Foundation.
During the summer of 2010, the K-8 Science Curriculum, AP Physics Curriculum, and Forensic Science Curriculum will be reviewed and edited. Each curriculum draft can be reviewed below. The Board of Education will review and vote on the new curriculum guides during the August 20, 2010 BOE meeting.

Social Studies, as defined by the National Council for the Social Studies, is “the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence.” The primary purpose of the Hillside social studies program is to provide an academically rigorous environment that produces active critical thinkers and productive, civically competent, participants in our society. Students are given the opportunity to develop their own sense of place in our community, state, nation and global village. Students will pursue individual goals and challenges as they develop an understanding of self, the diverse community of which they are a part, and their connection to the goals and interests of the global community and planet earth.
Students will study history, citizenship/political science, geography, economics, anthropology, sociology, and the humanities as prescribed by the New Jersey State Core Curriculum Content Standards in Social Studies. As they study the human condition in these contexts, they will gain an understanding of their own country’s history, institutions and environment. They will also apply their knowledge to understand the forces that have shaped world cultures. Students will learn to view contemporary problems facing the nation and the world as products of complex historical, institutional, and environmental processes. Students will discover their own individuality and the contributions they can make to society. They will know what they should strive to become and their role as responsible and productive individuals who possess civic competence.

World politics, commerce, culture, and migration place heavy demands on the American citizenry for foreign language skills which years ago were not necessary. In order to meet these demands, the Hillside School District provides a choice of language offerings. The goals for all modern languages offered require the mastery of the language with five areas of emphasis: speaking, comprehension, reading, writing, and understanding the culture of the people whose language is under study.
In today's global community, the study of a second language is an indispensable attribute of an educated person. The Hillside School District offers a multifaceted, comprehensive language program. The curriculum encompasses interpersonal communication, interpretive communication, and presentational communication while emphasizing the interrelationship between the language and its respective culture. Moreover, multiple language acquisition enables the individual to reflect upon and gain insight into the student's own language and culture.

Visual and Performing Arts
Art is basic and essential to the general education of students in the Hillside Township Schools. It is vital in nurturing the quality of life of all students. Courses focus on the individual artist’s ability to utilize skills, think creatively and solve problems in order to develop their own beliefs and values through the visual arts. It is our aim to guide the students into experiences that will extend their understanding of the world around them and provide tools with which to navigate.
The Music staff values the importance of music in all children’s lives. We strive to provide opportunities for musical comprehension which create a strong foundation for personal growth within the learning community. These fundamental skills become the framework for successful involvement within the wide variety of musical ensembles that are offered in grades four through twelve. At all levels, artistic excellence is the primary goal.
integrity of the Dance curriculum depends on developing a student’s ability to communicate in a way that is different from the written or spoken word, or even from other visual or auditory symbol systems. Dance develops a heightened awareness of self, others and the world in which one lives providing a joyful experience involving the intellect, the emotions and the body. Dance is a celebration of life, tradition, socialization, therapy, ethnic expression and communication.
Dance is movement, visually organized in space and time. The way a dance shapes movement defines the critical attributes of its style, genre, and place in the history of dance. A dancer’s skills and techniques are often based on tradition and passed down from one generation to the next. Nonetheless, dance is in a constant state of self-definition. Dancers, choreographers, and all those involved in studying and performing dance take part in defining and reinterpreting the art form.

Physical Education / Health
Health/Physical Education is a tool by which our students can realize the benefits of productive work, responsible leadership, and personal fulfillment. In the Hillside School District we will provide students with educational experiences that enable them to acquire knowledge and the ability to apply reasonable development of communication, problem-solving, and decisions making skills. Students will experience the benefits of learning and the values of wellness pursuits through the curriculum. The physical education staff will guide all students in discovering, valuing, and developing their unique talents in order to realize their potential and foster a commitment to a lifetime of personal wellness as a health-literate and physically educated citizen.
