The Hillside Science Department

The Vision & Mission for Science Instruction

The Science Department works diligently to ensure that all students are actively engaged learners. Our teachers work to promote an appreciation and curiosity for the sciences in our students. Through an equitable and rigorous NJ Student Learning Standards-aligned curriculum, our K-12 students gain a deeper and dynamic working knowledge of Science and Engineering practices so that they can engage in rich experiences that help them to develop the skills necessary for careers in Science, Engineering, and Technology! Our K-8 Science instructional materials are kit-based and encourage "hands-on science" and are endorsed by the National Science Foundation. The content spirals covering life, physical, and earth science every year. The high school curriculum includes lab-based Environmental, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics courses. We offer an array of science electives including "Project Lead the Way" Engineering, Computer Science, and Biomedical courses!

Mission
All students will possess an understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal decision-making, participation in civic life, and preparation for careers in STEM fields (for those that choose).

Science Department Goal

Prepare students to become scientifically literate individuals who can effectively:

  1. Strengthen Evidence-Based Scientific Thinking by engaging in scientific reasoning using evidence, data, and models to explain phenomena and support claims.

  2. Implement Consistent Three-Dimensional Science Instruction by providing students with coherent, standards-aligned instruction that integrates disciplinary content, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts across all grade levels.

  3. Build Strong Scientific Communication and Discourse by developing students’ ability to communicate scientific ideas clearly through speaking, writing, modeling, and discussion using academic language and evidence.
