Students in Ms. Gayle-Spencer's 8th grade Science V-lab class at W.O.K. learned about the energy of motion by engineering a balloon car! They tested how mass and velocity affect the motion of a test “dummy” hit by their engineered pendulum! So cool! #hillsidenj #hillsidepublicschools #science #vlab

In 1992 the World Federation of Mental Health deemed October 10th as World Mental Health Day. In the United States, we acknowledge mental health the entire week in order to promote education about mental health, raise awareness of mental health issues, and advocate against mental health stigma.
Deanna G. Taylor Academy celebrated this week in a few ways. On Tuesday, 10/10, students and staff wore green (the color of mental health awareness). Ms. Brennan, the school's social worker, visited every class to present various social and emotional learning lessons, including creating "worry stones" and coloring mandala elephants for a mural to address the "elephant in the room" mental health can sometimes be thought of as. The entire school attended an assembly entitled, "It's Okay to Walk Away," which centered on conflict resolution, and the idea that we must all "Stop and think, before we react." DGTA also continues to be an active participant in our district wide SEL curriculum through regular Move This World lessons in every classroom!

Todos somos, somos uno: "We are all, we are one". Even the rain couldn't stop the multitude of Hillside community members from packing out the Ola Edwards Gymnasium for the Hispanic Heritage Festival! It was an amazing day for Hillside Public Schools, there were food trucks, painters, artists, bouncy houses, balloon animals, games, music and more. Hillside Public Schools' teachers and staff have gone above and beyond to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month in our district. The list of administrators and leaders to thank for today is nearly endless, but we'd like to especially say thank you to World Language Supervisor, Ms. Evelyn Okparaeke and Ms. Marisol Rivera for all of their continuous hard work! Shoutout to Superintendent Glover, the Hillside Board of Education, our parents , families, and students as well! More content from the Hispanic Heritage Festival coming soon.

There are ways that you can help to promote awareness and show support for World Mental Health Day:
Talk about mental health issues with others, especially children if they are showing signs of depression or anxiety.
Attend events in your town by checking your county’s calendar.
Donate to mental health organizations or charities that provide support and fund research.
Volunteer your time with organizations that provide help to those who are suffering from mental health issues.
There sometimes is a stigma or discrimination in communities for individuals who have mental health issues, which causes many individuals not to seek out the help that they may need. There is no need for anyone to go untreated. There are many services available.
If you are having thoughts of suicide
If you need mental health-related crisis support
If you are worried about someone else
Please call or text 988 or visit the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline chat to connect with a trained crisis counselor.
