Climate Literacy in Action!

Hillside Public Schools' pilot teachers are implementing the new interdisciplinary curriculum unit developed through the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) Climate Literacy for Community Resilience Grant, funded by the NJDOE Office of Climate Change Education! This exciting work helps students make real-world connections between science, sustainability, and community impact.

As part of this work, teachers are integrating the National Inventors Hall of Fame’s Operation Hydro Drop as a hands-on curricular resource to support our K–3 interdisciplinary climate literacy unit — helping young learners explore water conservation, weather, and the importance of protecting our planet! A huge thank you to our incredible community partners — Monmouth University, Hillside Department of Public Works and the Department of Engineering, Public Works & Facilities Management County of Union, for their collaboration and support in developing this unit and its resources!

On Friday, October 10th, 2025, Hillside Innovation Academy hosted its phenomenal Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration!
It was an evening filled with culture, community, and celebration! H.I.A. honored the rich traditions and heritage of our Hispanic and Latin American scholars and families. This was a wonderful opportunity for the school community to come together and celebrate through music, dance, food, and more! The next stop on our Pink-tacular Saturday was Hurden Looker Elementary School, for Hillside Public Schools' Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration! Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized yearly from September 15th - October 15th! We had food, face-painters, bouncey houses, balloon animals, games, music, and more! Today, Hurden Looker Elementary School officially launched their new book scanning system to borrow books from their school library! Ms. Creanza’s class was the first to try it out- students typed in their 5- or 6-digit ID numbers and scanned their books like pros! Gifted & Talented teachers Mrs. Tran and Mrs. DeSilva, alongside Supervisor Dr. Kumar, explored coding and engineering with @sphero at Rutgers University, engaging with the Indi robot, Trash Collector challenge, and Sphero coding! They returned with best practices to bring to Hillside classrooms, including coding through play, student-led engineering challenges, cross-curricular STEM connections, and reflective discussions to deepen understanding! This chapter represents more than just an honor — it symbolizes unity, pride, and excellence within our diverse student body.

Through VOCES UNIDAS, Hillside High School students will celebrate the Spanish language, Hispanic heritage, and the values of scholarship, leadership, and community service. It’s a space where every voice matters, and where cultural identity becomes a source of inspiration and connection. The first induction ceremony will take place in early Spring 2026 — a milestone for the High School and a celebration of everything that makes our community strong and united.
