Today (4/17/2025), Hillside Public Schools and @scholastic hosted their 2025 R.E.A.L. Read Festival! Hundreds of Hillside Public Schools students in grades 4 - 6 from our three elementary schools (Deanna G. Taylor Academy, Hurden Looker Elementary School, and Ola Edwards Community School) filled Woodfield Stadium for a fun-filled day with interactive literacy activities. This event culminated in the celebration of the partnership between Hillside Public Schools and Scholastic, specifically the Scholastic R.E.A.L. (Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead) Mentorship Program! The Scholastic R.E.A.L. Mentorship Program is designed to support families and community members in mentoring students through monthly interactive read-alouds, promote academic and social growth, and make a lasting impact on students’ lives! Congratulations to the twenty-one Hillside High School seniors who have earned the New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy! The award recognizes student proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English and highlights their linguistic and cultural diversity.
“This is a significant accomplishment for these young scholars, as it sets them apart from other students across the state of New Jersey,” said Erskine R. Glover, Superintendent of Schools. “Not only is it a great award to put on their resumes and college applications, but it also speaks to their status as multilingual members of our society who can use their voices to advocate for the diverse members of their community.”

This series's third and final "Brothers Bonding with Books and Basketball" session was this past Saturday, April 12th, 2025! April 12th's session was the perfect finale to a great program for our 5th through 8th-grade students! Students in attendance played various basketball games and participated in activities that connected basketball with reading and literacy! Hillside High School's Student Council (@hillsidestuco), under the guidance of advisor Noreen Deutsch, has been awarded the National Gold Council of Excellence Award (for a second year, consecutively) by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC) @natstuco; recognizing its students' exceptional leadership, service, and community engagement! ! Hillside High School's student council stood out among thousands nationwide for their innovative approach to community, school culture, and education. They employ the help of the Union County Board of Elections to create a meaningful voting experience for the students of Hillside High School as they elect their Student Council Officers. This is a unique method of engaging students in civics. A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National [Gold] Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community! On 4/7/2025, W.O.K. Middle School and Hillside Innovation Academy (HIA) 7th-grade students took part in HISPA (Hispanics Inspiring Students' Performance and Achievement) Imagine Day - A Corporate Visit! at @keanuniversity. HISPA is a nonprofit organization that inspires Latino students to discover their potential and ignite their desire to embrace education and achieve success! Students heard from a variety of speakers in the morning and then went into breakout sessions for workshops and further mentoring/educational experiences! Today (4/7/2025), Mr. Skelton was very proud to welcome Hillside High School Class of 2012 graduate and Orthopedic Surgery Resident, Dr. Jomar Ayree, to speak with Mr. Skelton's Principles of Biomedical Science class. Dr. Ayree is currently working at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and will be at UCLA Medical Center in the fall! Dr. Ayree spoke with students about the journey to medicine and the many challenges he faced, as well as the accomplishments he has had as a Hillside student through medical school and beyond!
