Ms. Modena’s Climate Literacy School Project, through the Climate Literacy Grant, focuses on reducing food waste in her school through a “Share Table.” The Share Table allows students to place unopened or uneaten food items from their lunches for others to take if they want or need them! This initiative helps ensure that good food does not go to waste while teaching students to care for the environment and one another. Through this project, A.P. Last week’s (October 27th - 28th, 2025) Hillside High School Book Fair was a huge hit! Students were excited to browse, explore, and discover new books — and many left with great reads to take home! A heartfelt thank you goes out to our amazing JROTC (@hillsideajrotc) classes and instructors, Staff Sergeant Diaz and Colonel Drakeford, for their outstanding support in setting up, running, and breaking down the event. Their teamwork and leadership helped make the fair a smooth and successful experience for everyone. Over 100 students signed in across the two days, showing just how much our school community values reading and learning. Thank you to everyone who helped make the Book Fair such an engaging and memorable event!

On Monday, October 27th, 2025, Teaching Artists from Paper Mill Playhouse (@papermillplayhouse) ran 3 workshops for Hillside High School's Performing Arts students as part of their participation in Phase 2 of the Adopt-A-School Program! Students took part in singing, acting, and dancing workshops using material from West Side Story! They will build on the material learned when they attend more workshops at Paper Mill’s ArtsFest in December! Climate Literacy in Action!

Hillside Public Schools' pilot teachers are implementing the new interdisciplinary curriculum unit developed through the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) Climate Literacy for Community Resilience Grant, funded by the NJDOE Office of Climate Change Education! This exciting work helps students make real-world connections between science, sustainability, and community impact.

As part of this work, teachers are integrating the National Inventors Hall of Fame’s Operation Hydro Drop as a hands-on curricular resource to support our K–3 interdisciplinary climate literacy unit — helping young learners explore water conservation, weather, and the importance of protecting our planet! A huge thank you to our incredible community partners — Monmouth University, Hillside Department of Public Works and the Department of Engineering, Public Works & Facilities Management County of Union, for their collaboration and support in developing this unit and its resources!
