It was an evening filled with culture, community, and celebration! H.I.A. honored the rich traditions and heritage of our Hispanic and Latin American scholars and families. Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized yearly from September 15th - October 15th! We had food, face-painters, bouncey houses, balloon animals, games, music, and more! Today, Hurden Looker Elementary School officially launched their new book scanning system to borrow books from their school library! Ms. Creanza’s class was the first to try it out- students typed in their 5- or 6-digit ID numbers and scanned their books like pros! Gifted & Talented teachers Mrs. Tran and Mrs. DeSilva, alongside Supervisor Dr. Kumar, explored coding and engineering with @sphero at Rutgers University, engaging with the Indi robot, Trash Collector challenge, and Sphero coding! They returned with best practices to bring to Hillside classrooms, including coding through play, student-led engineering challenges, cross-curricular STEM connections, and reflective discussions to deepen understanding! Great work!

This chapter represents more than just an honor — it symbolizes unity, pride, and excellence within our diverse student body.

Through VOCES UNIDAS, Hillside High School students will celebrate the Spanish language, Hispanic heritage, and the values of scholarship, leadership, and community service. It’s a space where every voice matters, and where cultural identity becomes a source of inspiration and connection. The first induction ceremony will take place in early Spring 2026 — a milestone for the High School and a celebration of everything that makes our community strong and united.

Over the past two years, Ms. Gill field-tested the OpenSciEd 5th-grade units and provided valuable feedback that helped shape the final published program. This year, those units are being implemented across the country and right here in our 5th-grade classrooms! At Hurden Looker Elementary School, Ms. Petroccia’s 5th-grade class is investigating the question “How does a fallen tree become a nurse log?” Students are using iPads to document their observations, take notes, and conduct research. Of course, class pet Digit made sure to join in on the learning fun!
