Hillside Public Schools

On Thursday, March 21st, the ESL Department, led by Supervisor Evelyn Okparaeke, in collaboration with Ola Edwards Vice Principal, Azure Diggs and Math Supervisor, Rita Della Valle, hosted a ESL Parent Resource Night for Grades 2-6 to engage and inform parents of the resources available for their children specific to their English language needs. This event would not be possible without the dedicated teachers of Ola Edwards, Ms. Altenor, Mrs. Huynh, Ms. Rosamalia, and ESL teacher at Hurden Looker, Mrs. DeJesus who volunteered their time to teach parents about the valuable resources available to our multilingual learners both at school and at home. Special shoutout to Custodian Sunny and Security Guard Mel for all their assistance and to Maschio’s for providing food and refreshments. Being multilingual is a superpower and at Hillside Public Schools we celebrate and honor the diversity of all our students!

Mrs. DeSanto at Hillside High School hosted a Blood Drive Assembly yesterday, March 19th, 2024! Mr. Vittore Silversteri came to the High School auditorium to speak to our Seniors about the need for blood donations, and to encourage students to donate. Ola Edwards Community School 5th and 6th graders were treated to an awesome assembly earlier this afternoon (3/18/2024)! U.S. Magistrate Judge, Mr. Jose Almonte, visited Ola Edwards Community School to discuss the importance of education in his career, and his incredible journey, from being unable to speak English, to sitting as a Judge in the highest court in New Jersey! Judge Almonte spoke with an ESL student after the assembly as well, having been an ESL student himself as a child, demonstrating that with perseverance and a dream, anything is possible! On Friday, March 15th, 2024, Stevens Institute of Technology visited Hillside Innovation Academy (HIA) as a part of the "Bridging Brilliance" Initiative with Hillside Innovation Academy! The Bridging Brilliance program is aimed at strengthening STEM pathways from Hillside to Hoboken, New Jersey. Led by Stevens Faculty Member, Dr. Karam, HIA Scholars will apply content knowledge and execute skills needed throughout the workforce while being exposed to rigorous STEM curricula! On Thursday, March 7, 2024, Deanna G. Taylor Academy scholars in Grade 6 were presented with the "Students Change Hunger Award- Division III" - from the Community Food Bank! @cfbnj. Students Change Hunger (SCH) is a friendly competition where schools and youth community groups host food and/or fund drives at their schools to help feed our hungry New Jersey neighbors. Schools compete to donate the most food or funds to fight back against hunger in our state between September 2022, and January 2023! Great work Deanna G. On March 11th, A.P. Morris Early Childhood Center scholars participated in an assembly in which they asked questions about the attributes, habitats, and life span of a lizard, bearded dragon, hedgehog, owl, and chinchilla! The presenters provided excellent feedback about the attributes of the animals and how they are cared for. The scholars were engaged and displayed respect by maintaining a quiet environment to not scare the animals. After the show, the students were able to take pictures with the animals and buy merchandise. It was a wonderful experience for all! Thank you, @barnhillpreserve for visiting A.P. Hillside Innovation Academy (H.I.A.) grade 8 scholars had the opportunity to visit Newark Glass Roots recently. On this Arts and STEM based trip, students had the opportunity to learn beadmaking through flameworking, using a blowtorch and colorful glass to sculpt their own beads! Next, they visited the studio's workshop to create tile mosaics. In preparation for the trip, they explored radial symmetry in art class and applied this mathematical concept by repeating their designs from a small sketch. Mosaics were then grouted back at school. Lastly, they visited the "Hot Shop" where a glass professional glass blower treated them to a demonstration, sculpting a glass ornament right before their eyes! For all parts of their experience, students worked with professional artists and learned about programs they can participate in at Glassroots including Wednesday free classes, the high school apprenticeship program, and summer camps! #hillsidenj #hillsidepublicschools #newpride #newpathways #newpossibilities #glassblowing

Congratulations to the Academic Decathlon Team on making the Top Ten in the State Competition on Saturday, March 2, 2024! The team came in tenth place out of the sixteen teams competing! Josylin Alvarez received a Bronze Medal in Language and Literature. Christian Ortiz received a Bronze Medal in the Essay category. Pranay Talati received an Honorable Mention in the Speech category. Nosamudiana Omoigui received the Gold Medal in Speech with the second-highest score in the state. In addition, Nosamudiana was named the MVP of the competition. Coach Mandy and Coach Corritore are very proud of the work the team has done.
