Today at Hurden Looker Elementary School, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy collaborated on an engaging co-treatment activity in Mr. Westervelt's LLD classroom! The session began with a shared reading of the classic Dr. Seuss story "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish". After reading the story, students answered comprehension questions to reinforce their understanding of the material!
Following the reading, students participated in a hands-on activity where they created "red fish, blue fish slime." This activity involved following step-by-step directions, which provided opportunities for students to develop a range of occupational therapy skills, including hand strength (through squeezing ingredients from the tubes), fine motor skills (by picking up and incorporating beads into the slime), and the sensory experience of manipulating cold, sticky slime.
The students also focused on various speech and language skills throughout the activity. These included listening comprehension, following multistep directions, answering "wh" questions, and practicing matching skills (same or different). Additionally, students worked on expanding their expressive and receptive vocabulary, sequencing, turn-taking, rhyming words, and constructing complex, compound sentences.
The activity was a great success, and all students enjoyed the experience while making significant progress in both occupational therapy and speech and language goals! Great work students, shout-out to speech teacher Ms. Silva, and occupational therapist Ms. Borgen!
